I’m not suggesting that you never complain. Sometimes we need to communicate our dissatisfaction with poor customer service or shoddy products. Sometimes we need to complain about our working conditions, the noisy neighbor, or bureaucratic red tape, for example. But I wonder, do we really need to do it as much as we do?
In order to have a gentler, kinder, and more peaceful world, we should complain only when it really matters, but first we should seriously consider if it really matters. Before complaining, ask yourself three questions. Would I do any better if I were in the other person’s place? Will complaining really change anything? Is my complaining constructive or destructive in nature? If you can’t honestly answer yes, then it’s probably best just to remain silent.
Take Away: In order to have a gentler, kinder, and more peaceful world, we should complain only when it really matters.
