Childhood is a fairly recent phenomenon and even today it’s not universally accepted. For most of history and for many cultures today childhood does not exist. Children are treated as small adults.
Is Childhood an invention of a prosperous society that could afford it or was it discovered by a moral nation desiring to do what is best for their young? If it was invented then childhood could one day become a cultural artifact as children consume, have sex, and work like adults. We already see this happening to some degree.
If childhood was discovered, however, we must work hard to protect it as the special time of life that it is. I believe this issue may be the greatest cultural debate of our time.
