“I caught a fish, a big fish. I caught a REALLY big fish!” The excitement was made all the more lively, as the fisherman was not a he, but a she. She came to live with us not long ago from an inner city life of great turmoil. For this young lady catching a fish represented not only an accomplishment, albeit with a bit of bragging rights, but more importantly, an achievement and perhaps a zest for a life skill.
The Chinese Proverb explains it best, “Give a girl a Fish, and you feed her for a day. teach a girl to fish, and you feed her for a lifetime.”
At Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes we work hard to give our children life skills. We teach them to cook, to keep tidy rooms with organized closets, to clean, and, to get jobs. Life skills are one of the cornerstones for successful lives. I’m happy this young lady caught a fish. I hope she catches more!
