Through Trauma Informed Care we do not ask what is wrong with a youth, but ask what has happened to the youth that has caused them such pain or frustration resulting in negative behavior. As we serve kids from hard places, we work to peel back layers of pain, abuse, and fear in order to restore trust which is essential to healthy living. When kids are operating from fear, they’re not operating with open brains.
I am uplifted daily knowing that our youth feel secure, loved, and inspired to rise above whatever challenges they have faced. One of our youth now loves to hug, but when she came to us, she was painfully withdrawn. Houseparents and counselors worked to build trust, thereby releasing her fear and replacing it with greater confidence.
Take Away: Don’t ask what’s wrong, ask what happened.
