Here’s the thing. Showing respect says more about you than the one being respected. Consequently, disrespecting someone conveys more about you than the person being disrespected. Why? Because, the way we behave toward others is an expression of our values and character, not theirs.
Since this is true, we should treat others with respect, not because they have a right, but because we have a moral obligation to do unto others the way we want them to do unto us. Again, it’s not necessarily because they deserve it, but because doing less only diminishes our own character.
