I lead a social services organization which bears his name. Unlike a stretch of highway, or a public school that honors an historical figure, but does little to promote that person's ideas, Patrick Henry Family Services strives to fulfill its mission in the “spirit of liberty” Patrick Henry so fiercely advocated.
The past seven years I’ve often asked myself this question: “How would Patrick Henry run a child welfare program in the modern context? To me, it’s not an academic question. It’s much more practical. The fifty- five- year- old nonprofit, where I serve as C.E.O, was birthed and matured on the former estate of Patrick Henry. His life and ideology are very much a part of who we are and what we do. It is in our DNA.
Take Away: Liberty or death is still the question.
