That ideal of a mother’s love is simply unquestioned by the majority. A mother’s love is lifted up as the highest of earthly virtues. But tragically, it isn’t reality for millions of people. For an ever growing number, Mother’s Day has become the toughest holiday of the year.
For those who have been abandoned, neglected, or mistreated by their mother, it can feel like the height of all hypocrisy to celebrate. We can honor motherhood as a beautiful concept and highest ideal, but we cannot sincerely celebrate our own mothers. For us, it’s more a matter of obedience to God than love toward mother....and that’s okay.
