On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven delivered the commencement address to the University of Texas. In that address he gave a suggestion that could positively change lives, and possibly the world.
He said, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.”
At Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes many of our youth come to use from chaotic home lives with no structure, little hope, and sometimes no bed. Under the gentle guidance of our house parents, one of the very first tasks our youth undertake is making their bed daily. Yes, making a bed does make a solid difference. It establishes order, it gives strength in consistency, and it’s just as Admiral McRaven notes, an accomplishment that can encourages other accomplishments.
Take Away: Small habits can make big differences.
