Children come into the foster care system for all kinds of reasons. It may surprise you to know that it’s neglect, and not abuse, which is the major reason. It may further surprise you to learn that addiction to drugs is the leading cause of those neglect cases.
About twenty-five percent of child welfare cases in 2013 involved heroin or cocaine. That’s up nineteen percent from 2010. A shocking seventy percent of children in the system less than a year old had parents who were using those drugs. The real challenge is getting the parents to kick the habit, especially when the drug is heroin. It can be a lifelong battle. We are losing the war on drugs and it is the children who are suffering our defeat.
