For the past few summers I’ve been taking the younger boys on a special hike down the Little Fallen River. We actually hike the river, sometimes wading, sometimes swimming, but always playing. But to be truthful, some of the boys just simply don’t know what to make of it. Some have never spent the day playing in a creek, hunting for crawdads, skipping rocks, or splashing and dunking their friends.
I’m seeing this more and more; children who don’t have that sense of childhood amazement their parents and grandparents knew. You actually have to show them how to have fun in the woods and be creative without electronics…that should never be. Children need to regain the carefree joy of childhood, and it is us adults who must insure they get it.
Take Away: Children need to regain the carefree joy of childhood, and it is us adults who must insure they get it.
