I loved my job. I loved what I was doing and I loved the organization I was doing it for. It was a dream job. So, you can imagine my great disappointment when I was told I would be one of many being laid off. Disappointment quickly turned to depression as I tried to make sense of what happened.
A wise person told me something then that I wish I had known earlier in my 35 year career. He said, “You can love your job but your job can never love you back.” Isn’t that true? Our jobs can provide income. They can give us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Our jobs can be opportunities for personal growth. They can even be places where lasting relationships are made. But, our jobs can never love us. Remember that.
