Three days later the parents returned very excited to have their instructions to their son reinforced by such a great and important person. Gandhi looked the young boy in the eyes and said, “Stop eating sugar.” Curious that they had to wait, the parents inquired, “Why didn’t you tell him three days ago. Why did you make us come back?” Gandhi replied, “I had to stop eating sugar first before I could tell him to quit.”
Whether it’s true or not the story teaches a valuable lesson. Parents, don’t give instructions you can’t obey. Teachers, don’t give lessons you don’t know yourself. Preachers, don’t sermonize what you do not live. Politicians, don’t pass laws you refuse to live under.
Take Away: Parents, don’t give instructions you can’t obey.
