Communicating to children that many people in the world do not have what they need is important. Yet, it can’t stop there. We must also demonstrate in practical ways how those needs can be met. Teaching children there are unmet needs in the world, and then showing them how they can meet those needs not only helps to counter the more selfish side of their nature, but also gives children confidence that they can do something about it.
We do that by stressing the importance of serving others by modeling generosity ourselves and finding opportunities, creating opportunities if we have to, for each child to contribute in some specific way to some particular need. It will also build character and connection.
Take Away: Children need to realize the world is a better place because they are in it.
