What, if anything, should government do about it? As little as possible. I believe, in many ways, government has made it worse. However, there’s a role it can play. If government would become convinced preventing divorce was in our nation’s best interest, they could set national goals of reducing divorce among families with children.
They could also create a public health campaign to inform Americans of the risks associated with divorce and the long-term benefits of marriage. Government could mandate that surplus welfare funds be used to strengthen marriages. They could also end no-fault divorces for parents with minor children, or make it harder to get.
Take Away: Reducing the rate of divorce, improves the outcomes for children.
