With each passing year there is a growing sense of familiarity and comfortableness with this other presence in one's life. At the same time, the opposite is true; There is a growing strangeness. You know the other person better than you have ever known anyone, yet you often wonder if you know them at all.
Mike Mason, in 'The Mystery of Marriage', says it so well; "There is something so purely and untouchably mysterious in the fact of living out one's days cheek to jowl under the same roof with another being who remains, no matter how close you manage to get, essentially a stranger". Mr. Mason is right. I think it is this mystery, if embraced without reservation, that keeps us in the marriage for the long haul.
Take Away: There is something uncanny about marriage.
