I grew up in the midst of the Appalachia region, the front lines of this conflict. My family and I were the very folks who were to benefit from the greatest poverty fighting experiment in American history, I dare say in all of World history.
We received the many handouts and participated in the various programs designed to remove the scourge of poverty from our lives and homeland. As a professionally trained social worker, I have spent my career working with the poor and the trying to mitigate the horrible effects of poverty. I've been on both sides of this war and I have seen with my own eyes the unintended consequences of this bad national policy and I have to say that it is way past time we stop the madness.
